StudyTipsforOnlineCourse

During these difficult times, most employees have been directed to work remotely. Working from home with the usual distractions can be challenging enough, but it’s even harder when you add in trying to study for an exam.  If you find yourself in the position of studying for your insurance or securities exam within the confines of your own home, these study tips  will keep you focused during the learning process.

1. Practice social distancing

Secure a room or dedicated study space that is quiet and as far away from others as possible. A room with a door you can shut is ideal. Hang a note on the door when in “study mode” so others know you cannot be disturbed. Use noise-cancelling headphones if needed. This will cut down on unnecessary distractions.

2. Make sure your workspace is comfortable and optimal for learning

Set up your workspace with comfortable furniture, good lighting, and a reliable high-speed internet connection. The last thing you want is to lose a signal while navigating your online course!

3. Block out distractions

Unplug from all sources of communication while in study mode. Turn off your cell phone, close your email, and turn off all notifications of your social media outlets.

4. Hold yourself accountable

It’s important to plan out your day to prioritize your daily tasks and prevent procrastination. Have a hard START and END time for the day and stick to the plan. Set reasonable time limits by scheduling your study time, break time, and mealtime.

5. Take frequent breaks

You should schedule an hourly break to stretch and get some fresh air. Allow yourself to check messages and your email a couple of times a day.

6. Enlist friends and family

Communicate your schedule and your goals with friends and family so they can support and respect your study schedule.

7. Keep positive and motivated

Keep your workspace positive and organized to keep you motivated to follow through with your study plan. Keep an inspirational quote or picture nearby to remind you of WHY you are doing this. Remember, a little goes a long way, so avoid clutter that can be distracting.

8. Take care of yourself

Throughout your online learning experience, take time to take care of YOU. Get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, and eat healthy snacks to keep up your energy. Avoid stressful situations that can cause test anxiety.

9. Stay focused

Write a checklist of what you need to accomplish for the day and stick to the plan. Don’t try to multi-task!

10. Reward yourself

Continue to reward yourself along the way after completing large tasks. This will avoid burnout, which may make it harder to concentrate along the way. Treat yourself at the end of each day with a good meal, time with family, or watching a good movie. Remove yourself from your workspace once you are finished for the day.

Once you have successfully completed your goal, it’s time to celebrate!
